Craft, Community, and Reclaimed Design: Birdseye at AIAVT’s Inaugural Furniture Competition

For many, the curb is a free marketplace for home goods, mostly furniture. The offerings are predominantly inexpensive, mass produced, cheaply designed, and poorly built products for consumption and instant gratification, all destined for the landfill. The curb also offers opportunity for neglected, quality designed furniture, mostly discarded due to lack of care and commitment to timeless beauty, that deserves a second chance.

Birdseye's submission to the AIA Vermont Furniture Competition embodies the spirit of rehabilitation, breathing new life into three curb-found chairs by means of giving each a deep cleaning, simple repairs and glue ups, refinishing with an application of leftover paint, re-upholstery with leftover fabrics, and a base constructed of wood cutoffs. The three resuscitated chairs embody a singular ethos of the slow furniture movement and are presented on a platform representing a metaphorical curb.

Materials: Found chairs, leftover paint, leftover upholstery, wood cut-offs.
